Saw this article earlier on Wired and it seems like a promising new take on our favorite oddball engine. Not designed for automotive initially, but interesting anyway.

While I like me a good Dorito, I still don’t understand what a gas Wankel can do that a piston engine cannot do better or more efficiently.
Electric Wankel is pretty cool, though.

Not only that, but the massive oil consumption, terrible fuel economy, and worst of all - it doesn’t produce that much powerto offset the drawbacks.

It’s not a electric Wankel, but a regular old internal combustion one with a refines design to make it more efficient.
They talk about it being used as a generator or confined space use mainly as opposed to direct drive in an automotive.

Ah, I just saw EVs in the title and assumed it was electric. I would be a very light generator motor for a Volt-style hybrid for sure.

Lots of power in a smaller/lighter package. And the reason why it uses lots of oil is because it’s basically a 2 stroke. And that means it burns oil by design.

The article says they fix those problems by putting a peanut rotor in a triangle chamber but even the article doesn’t mention much in terms of automotive applications.
